History of Phoenix, Oregon
Originally a native dwelling for the Takelma people, Phoenix is one of the first inhabited areas of the Rogue River Valley of non-natives. The first non-native official resident is Sam Colver, who took up a donation land claim where the town is now located in 1851. Shortly after, the Jacksonville gold fields brought settlers to the Rogue Valley area, and in 1852 San Colver built the historic Colver House (his cabin) which is to this day still standing on Main St, in Phoenix. Growing quickly, the area soon became a popular stage stop. Originally called “Gasburg,” Phoenix, Oregon eventually got its namesake from the post office, whose owner, S.M. Waite had placed a metal insurance plate from Phoenix Fire Insurance Company on the front of the building as the name of his post office. Eventually the residents called the town “Phoenix,” after the post office landmark.
